Strengths: Ease of installation, ease of use, quality of utilities included
Weaknesses: User interface in the primary app is dated. The shiny black surface collects dust like mad - cosmetic issue only. Aged value-added software.
Summary: This scanner replaced an HP ScanJet
5530 that had a lamp burn out. I originally wanted to just replace the lamp since the ScanJet was 'good enough'. However, I could never find the replacement lamp and so I started looking for a replacement scanner. The Canon 8800F had some good qualities in the technical specifications and both editorial and user reviews were net positive. After receiving the scanner, I was impressed with the quality of the utility software, although they were 2 revs back with some of the other software that was included (Adobe Elements). Canon did a good job engineering the device and I am very satisfied with the product.

Strengths: Very Fast. Easy to operate. High resolution.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I recently decided to upgrade to Vista 64. This made my Canoscan 3000ex obsolete. I have scanned over 900 slides from family members since receiving the 8800F. The scanner has worked perfectly. The Adobe photoshop elements that came with the scanner has made the work easy. I would recommend this scanner and Cost Central to anyone.

Strengths: Good color correction, lots of choices when scanning.
Weaknesses: Not many - see summary
Summary: So far, has worked great. Did lose one batch of scans when program terminated unexpectedly. Would prefer scans were automatically saved, so if something happened to power or whatever, scans wouldn't be lost. Definitely would recommend this scanner. Scan slides very well, which was what I had bought it for. Restored some faded slides better than I would have thought.

Strengths: I like the quality and instant turn on.
Weaknesses: None.
Summary: The instant turn on, due to the white LED light source, is a nice feature. The size of the slide scans are larger in file size (9600 vs 5400) and better in quality than my Konica/Minolta 5400II.
The shadows and color are better with the 8800F. You can batch-scan up to twelve 35mm frames or up to four slides.

Strengths: Makes excellent scans of both pictures and slides
Weaknesses: Takes Two Steps. Sometimes the scans cannot be printed; possibly the fault of the computer.
Summary: I am glad I purchased the scanner and would recommend it to others.

Strengths: I bought this to mainly do neg. slides and some photos. It has worked fantastic I've scanned over 1600 35mm neg. so far. Works great with Vista.
Weaknesses: Had dust on the flatbed. Thought I had bad neg. or the scanner was bad. Cleaned the flatbed and works perfect.
Summary: Cannon and CostCentral are tops. Best price and fast delivery. Would buy from again without a second thought. Highly recommended on both accounts.

Strengths: Excellent quality for the price! Scanning 4 slides took about 30 seconds to see a preview and about another minute to two minutes to fully scan all 4 slides.
Weaknesses: It is a little big, but I have limited space with 2 computers and 2 printers so I may not be the best judge of size. If your slide/film is dark the scan is dark. The software does not do well with dark pictures so you are kind of stuck with it that way unless you like grainy pics. Oh yeah, the manual is entirely too basic, but they have online help if you need it.
Summary: I bought a VuPoint from Hammacher Schlemmer for 100 bucks that was HORRIBLE! The CanoScan is MUCH better quality and for only $60 more - totally worth it! The Adobe Photoshot Elements is a little complicated at first, but once you get used to it you'll really have fun with it (just remember Control+Z is undo and so you can do whatever you want without worrying! LOL).

Strengths: very easy to use. I love the multiple page pdf feature
Weaknesses: contrast default setting for document scan is too light. Imagery scan defaults are a bit washed out and grainy.
Summary: So far I am quite happy with it. I find that photos that I've scanned to not keep the vivid colors well. I am still working with the software to get more from it.

Strengths: Makes copies directly without having to save file. Makes PDF files without needing to buy Adobe Acrobat.
Weaknesses: Does not give choice of where to save PDF files.
Summary: This scanner has produced excellent pictures and the colors are OK, somewhat more saturated than the original, this could be corrected by processing the scanned image as a photo but this requres a little bit of work.

Strengths: Very, very fast; great quality scans for the price
Weaknesses: price...anything more than free is a weakness to me ;)
Summary: Great scanner for pics, very fast, produces great film conversions too. Included software is OK, but we're using Adobe CS3 so the power of this scanner is really being exploited, but don't get me wrong-- it can totally keep up, and then some. It is hooked up to a USB hub, which in turn is hooked up to 16 ft of cable to a Dell Precision T3400 with quad core processor and 4GB of RAM. The whole setup just smokes on XP and Vista (dual boot).

Strengths: Speed and image quality
Weaknesses: don't know yet
Summary: I am very happy with my new scanner.
I can scan pages from my company catalog and the color duplication looks better in a pdf file than the original catalog itself. I can send these to my customers via email in just minutes.
Also, I can store documents with ease.

Strengths: Fast on, high resolution, great scans and powerful software suite.
Weaknesses: Scanning slides at 4800 dpi takes about six minutes -- although that may not be the scanner's fault, but maybe my somewhat older computer that the scanner is hooked up to.
Summary: I had an Epson Perfection 1650 scanner with which I was perfectly happy. However, I recently came into possession of a treasure trove of old family slides that I wanted to scan. I tried the dedicated slide scanner from Hammacher Schlemmer, but that turned out to be a terrible product. After additional research, I selected the Canoscan 8800F. What a great scanner! After adjusting to the significantly different user interface, I have decided that I really love this scanner and its associated software suite. The 4800 dpi scans of the slides have no artifacts that I can see, and I examined several at various zoom levels. It also serves very well as a routine scanner.
Switching from one mode to the other is as simple as clicking out a panel in the cover and inserting the plastic slide holder on the platen. The holder manages four slides. The scanning software identifies the four slides and provides four separate images simultaneously in a preview screen. One can then crop and individually "tweak" any or all the slides before scanning. It's a great piece of software.
