Cisco ASA 5500 Series adaptive security appliances are purpose-built solutions that combine best-of-breed security and VPN services with the innovative Cisco Adaptive Identification and Mitigation (AIM) architecture. Designed as a core component of the Cisco Self-Defending Network, the Cisco ASA 5500 Series provides proactive threat defense that stops attacks before they spread through the network, controls network activity and application traffic, and delivers flexible VPN connectivity. The result is a powerful multifunction network security appliance family that provides the security breadth and depth for protecting home office, branch office, small and medium-sized business, and enterprise networks while reducing the overall deployment and operations costs and complexities associated with providing this new level of security.

Strengths: * Great throughput * Highly configurable enterprise-class device * Well-Built * 2 Power-Over-Ethernet (PoE) ports * Awesome device overall

Weaknesses: * The internal DHCP server does not have the ability to do DHCP reservations (major weakness)

Summary: I replaced a Checkpoint/Software embedded NGX appliance with The Cisco ASA 5505. Overall, I like the Cisco appliance much better. The Cisco ASA 5500 series is not for the average home user. It is a enterprise-class device and the CLI and GUI are much more involved than your average Linksys, DLink, or Netgear device. But if you are a techie, you'll love all of the settings and configurations that you have at your fingertips.

Strengths: Relatively easy to setup. Great for expert users.

Weaknesses: Many features and can be complex for a novice.

Summary: This is our first business class firewall router. Look for a few "Getting Started" guides on cisco.com when installing.

Strengths: Best firewall around bar none.

Weaknesses: Not for the timid, if youre not experienced with Cisco make sure you get a contract.

Summary: Easily the most flexible product on the market. There is a GUI but you should use the CLI to understand whats really going on. If youre a newbie be sure to get a service contract (which also gets you software updates) so that you can get support from TAC.

Kevin H - Network Administrator

Strengths: Extremely versatile product with superior performance and reliability.

Weaknesses: High learning curve if unfamiliar with Cisco products. Rather pricy -- competing products offer comparable functionality, are easier to setup and maintain, and cost significantly less.

Summary: This is a wonderful product if you don't mind paying the "Cisco Premium." The ASA 5505 offers a powerful array of functionality and is ideal for small businesses, remote office/branch office, or even in a home office. Essentially, this model brings the PIX 501 up-to-date and provides room for future features. The ASDM (GUI setup and management) is not as clean cut as others, but allows for easy setup of basic functions. However, the command line interface cannot be avoided for more advanced configuration. Cisco CLI has basically set the standard, and many networking devices use a similar CLI. When buying Cisco, you are paying, first and foremost, for the name. Secondly, you are paying for hardware limited by Cisco?s licensing models. There are several other respectable brands that offer similar products, usually with an easier setup and less restricting licensing. Be aware of other brands like SonicWall and compare between models to find what is best suited for your needs.

Strengths: everything you need can find in this box...

Weaknesses: With basic license, only has 3 vlan.....

Summary: This is a really great product for small business or even for home networking. This gives you everything to setup a secure network with VPN connections and with a reasonable price. If you are taking exam for Cisco , this might also be a good choice for practicing.

Strengths: Fairly easy to configure. The new ASDM GUI actually works pretty well and improvements in the command-line interface also make things easier. Feature rich, including a clientless Web-VPN.

Weaknesses: Some of the limitations of the base license can be frustrating, but you get what you pay for.

Summary: Good security appliance for a small office or home office. Affordable and far superior to consumer-grade devices for the workplace.

Tareef Allah-Khalid, CEO, IEG Technology Solutions, Inc.

Strengths: Quick deployment, familair CLI interface

Weaknesses: A little programming change coming from the PIX 500 series

Summary: We bought a ASA 5505 to deploy to a customer's remote site. We had it programmed and deployed in hours. We highly recommend this device to companies.
