D-Link DGS 1248T

Mfg Part #: DGS-1248T

D-Link DGS 1248T

DGS-1248T is part of D-Link's next generation Web Smart Gigabit switch series, which blends plug-and-play simplicity with exceptional performance and reliability for small and medium-sized business (SMB) networking. Housed in a new style rack-mount metal case with easy-to-view front panel diagnostic LEDs, this switch provides extensive security features and the option to connect fiber links with its four SFP expansion slots.

The switch provides MAC address filters to screen access to the network. It supports 802.1X port-based authentication, allowing the network to be configured with external RADIUS servers. Additional features like D-Link Safeguard Engine protect the switch against traffic flooding caused by virus/worm outbreaks.

The switch supports 802.1Q VLAN Tagging for traffic segmentation by groups to enhance network security and performance. It also supports 802.1p Priority Queues, enabling administrators to run bandwidth-sensitive applications such as streaming multimedia and VoIP on the network. These functions allow the switch to work seamlessly with managed VLAN and 802.1p traffic on the network.

Implemented as a complete L2 device, this switch includes functions such as Jumbo frame support, IGMP snooping, port mirroring, Spanning Tree, port trunks and 802.3x Flow Control to enhance network performance and reliability.

Switch configuration and management is through the SmartConsole Utility or a web-based GUI. SmartConsole is an easy way to access the switch from a local PC; there is no need to type in any IP address or subnet, and all switches connected on the network are displayed on the screen for instant access.

The web-based GUI allows switch access from any location on the network or from a remote site, using a web-browser. It allows extensive switch configuration setting, which can be backed up for duplication in other switches. In addition, built-in MIBs allow administrators to integrate the switch with other third-party devices for management in an SNMP environment.

Strengths: VLANs, Gigabit

Weaknesses: Shared VLAN ports

Summary: Over all it is good (rev a). The problem I found is that if you include one port in several vlans , then the switch turns from a switch to a hub, which effectively brings down its throughput from 96Gbps to 1Gbps. Sharing a port in this way can be nice for a device that lives in all networks like a firewall/router for example.
