D-Link DNS 323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure

Mfg Part #: DNS-323

D-Link DNS 323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure

The D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure, when used with internal SATA drives, enables you to share documents, files, and digital media such as music, photos, and video with everyone on the home or office network. Remotely accessing files through the Internet is also possible with the built-in FTP server. Whether you are allowing access locally or over the Internet, keep data safe by only giving rights to specific users or groups. When configuring the DNS-323, you can create users and groups and assign them to folders with either read or read/write permissions. This is ideal for an office environment with employee-specific sensitive data or for the home where you can ensure your children will only have access to age appropriate material.

Strengths: Good read/write speed, very stable, low power mode when not in use.

Weaknesses: Read/write speed can always be better ;-) and a different fan that wasn't so noisy would be nice.

Summary: I've had a DNS-323 for well over a year now and I am very happy with it (so much so I bought another). I would highly recommend it for light home/home office duty. Additional features of iTunes server and FTP server are a nice bonus.

Strengths: Simple, fast, and flexible as far as HD selection.

Weaknesses: You have to update to the latest firmware version. Access management setup could be better.

Summary: The initial setup of the unit was simple and it worked flawlessly out of the box. Considering the performance of the unit, it is very good value for the money

Summary: I love this drive enclosure. I've got 2 drives mirrored currently and it is fast and reliable, even over the wireless connection. Set-up was super easy and perfect for my needs.

Strengths: gigabit lan works fast plus you determine the amount of capacity. Online accessibility!

Weaknesses: It takes a lot of time to download off the DNS 323 from the internet, but it does work.

Summary: For the price, this is a great server which is fast for a home network and can be accessed from the internet. I can allow access to family in which they can add to and look at photos or whatever.

Strengths: Compact Form Factor. Quiet. Straightforward Interface.

Weaknesses: USB Print Server useless. Documentation and Tech Support are worthless.

Summary: My original intent was to create a central dumping ground for media files and archives while providing a print server for a mac laptop and a PC desktop. The print server does work however, anything monitoring software for ink levels or error codes do not. Also, a single one page text print job has taken up to several minutes to start. I didn't bother trying to print photos. One strange bug I have not figured out is one drive intermittently glows amber (a sign of a bad drive). Both drives are brand new Seagate 1 TB and there's no other indication that I have a bad drive, just the one light changing color for no reason.

Strengths: It has a 500mhz processor, the Marvell 88X7042 SATA controller and marvell's 88E1111 gigabit network handler. All proven and a very efficient case design with small volume/footprint, the dual bay sata with raid, standard linux file format (ext2), the ability to spin down and its operating power efficiency. For the money, there's really none other on the radar with these credentials.

Weaknesses: USB port which can only be used for usb print, but with hack you can use a external drive but that's little buggy.

Summary: Over all I am happy with the product so far, it pretty fast and easy to use.

Strengths: Sturdy, easy to install, great backup software, great features

Weaknesses: Wish it had more than one USB plug for networking multiple printers (picky weakness)

Summary: Overall, this box has done everything I had hoped for (except for networking multiple printers) I love the feature set, for the price, and would recommend it for any one who wants a simplistic set-up of a NAS device

Strengths: Easy configuration and perfect for our needs. I like the fact that we can rotate hard drives with no real hassle. I will admit there are a lot of features that I just don't use in a business environment (Itunes server to name one), but they are easily disabled and do not get in the way.

Weaknesses: None so far.

Summary: We have used these units on small networks to do image based backups of servers, rotating out the HD's for offsite backups, and they have performed flawlessly for that purpose.

ProMAS

Strengths: price, easy setup, extra features

Weaknesses: Key improvements can be made through the use of an internal power supply and including better firmware . Drive formatting should include a quick format option or reduce standard format times as they are currently excessive.

Summary: Overall a good product for the home NAS market with useful bonus features that add to the overall value. This product could be an alternative for small businesses, given the current weaknesses are addressed.

Strengths: RAID, good management tools, continual updates

Weaknesses: Support OK, seem to not put a lot of effort in solving problems. Has been locking up since day one about once a week. You have to pull the power off of it. I just installed firmware update, 1.03, and that may have fixed it.

Summary: If they get the lockup problem fixed I would rate it "very good". If you added better support I would rate it great!
