ss4200user

Strengths: Well designed and easy to assemble. Fans are 70mm 4-wire PWM and very quiet (a few seconds after startup). Good performance, fairly efficient power usage (similiar to an ITX system with same drives). Standard PC BIOS, can boot from USB flash drive

Weaknesses: Adding or removing drives (including USB and SATA) can cause system to re-order priority of boot drive, not yet fixed in BIOS. No VGA console, so have to use serial console (uses standard serial pinout) to install Linux. FreeNAS also works, but not with ACPI enabled kernel.

Summary: Hardware is designed for Windows Home Server, so that is very easy to install and performs well. Easy to install Linux using serial console, and modern Linux distros have full support for all included features (LAN, sensors, chipset, etc.). Performance is great, and it works for me with the first 2GB DIMM I tried.
