Lenovo ThinkPlus USB Keyboard with UltraNav

Mfg Part #: 31P8950

Lenovo ThinkPlus USB Keyboard with UltraNav

Bring legendary IBM ThinkPad notebook keyboard look and feel to IBM desktop systems or to ThinkPad docking solutions. For the ultimate in pointing flexibility, this multi-pointing system combines an IBM-customized touch pad and the latest TrackPoint device. The two, built-in USB ports conveniently provides for additional expansion. Plus, it's the only external keyboard that allows you close the ThinkPad notebook LCD and still access key ThinkPad notebook features requiring the function (Fn) key, such as system sleep and suspend.

Adjustable keyboard feet provide for three levels of typing comfort; flat (folded under), level-1 and level-2. Integrated keyboard cord wrap lets you adjust the length of the cord for use or storage. Function (Fn) key provides access to key ThinkPad notebook features such as (depending on model) speaker volume, LCD/external monitor select, LCD brightness, system sleep and suspend controls. IBM ThinkPad UltraNav, an example of IBM ThinkVantage Design, lets you choose which pointing device to use: TrackPoint, touchpad, or both. And, it eliminates the need for an external mouse and saves desktop space.

The IBM USB Keyboard with UltraNav is supported on the following IBM systems: IBM-compatible desktop or ThinkPad notebook system (not compatible with notebooks other than IBM ThinkPad). Full functionality of ThinkPad hot keys will be with the following ThinkPad models: 2681, 2682, 2683, 2672, 2673, 2366, 2367, 2652, 2653, 2658, 2659, 2677. All others, including desktops, will have some non-functioning ThinkPad hot keys.

Strengths: the touchpad allows you to keep both hands on the keyboard at all times without the need to bounce back and forth between mouse and keyboard

Weaknesses: the touchpad is a little slower than the mouse but if you are used to a laptop it is no problem at all

Summary: This is an awesome product which improves productivity

Strengths: UltraNav functionality usuable in desktop systems, interfaces well as an external keyboard for Lenovo laptops.

Weaknesses: Light construction, spendy compared to similar keyboards.

Summary: The Lenovo ThinkPlus USB Keyboard with UltraNav is actually kind of a queer duck as far as keyboards go. You get the famous UltraNav functionality, along with a touchpad if you desire to use it. However, this comes with a few caveats: firstly, the keyboard is extremely light. It's more a travel keyboard (with numpad), rather than a true desktop model. Tangentially, it feels a bit flimsy, due to it's light weight. More conventional desktop keyboards weigh considerably more, and have a more solid "feel" to them. Secondly, it's a tad spendy. At nearly $90 (including shipping, if any), you can buy a more conventional wired keyboard, and still have some cash left over. Ergonomically, it's more "mushy" than it's siblings integrated into Lenovo laptops. I find the keys have a lot more give in them than the keys in my ThinkPad do. The keys tend to be "spread out" and occupy more horizontal space than regular keyboard keys do, necessitating some adjustments in my typing style. Overall, it's not a bad keyboard, however, you must be willing to live with it's shortcomings.

Redwing

Strengths: If you are used to using IBM Thinkpad notebooks, this keyboard is great. It exactly matches the Thinkpad keyboard with a number pad added on the right. I also like that it is the same thickness and lays flat like a notebook keyboard.

Weaknesses: For the same reasons I like it, others might not if you are not a true Thinkpad keyboard person.

Summary: So for the right person who lives most of their life with a Thinkpad, this keyboard is great for when you need to use your desktop.
