Linksys Wireless-G Router for Sprint Mobile Broadband WRT54G3G

Mfg Part #: WRT54G3G-ST

Linksys Wireless-G Router for Sprint Mobile Broadband WRT54G3G

The Linksys Wireless-G Router for Mobile Broadband is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. Second, it's a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired- Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Thirdly, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a mobile broadband Internet connection (requires a mobile broadband data card). Alternatively, you can also connect a cable or DSL modem to the Ethernet port and access the Internet via your available broadband service.

Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing document files, a printer, storage space, and other resources.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Router for Mobile Broadband can encode all wireless LAN transmissions securely with WEP or WPA Personal encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN passthrough. Configuration is a snap with the web-based configuration utility. With the Wireless-G Router for Mobile Broadband, you can create a secure wireless network with Internet connectivity, anywhere that mobile broadband Internet service is available.

This product is certified for use with Sprint's Mobile Broadband service.

Strengths: Easy setup, nice price.

Weaknesses: Can only use with Sprint broadband service.

Summary: This product is perfect for my requirements. I had a Panatech broadband card and this enables me to share the connection with the rest of my family.

Strengths: Works well with the Sprint card it is designed to work with. Easy set-up.

Weaknesses: The design just feels cheap, could do with a better stand. Expensive as compared to normal routers.

Summary: Works flawlessly with a UNIX/W2K network. Set-up was not difficult and has performed without any issues. Just need to make sure the coverage for the cell modem in the area you wish to use it is good as the router won't help with that. Also make sure you get the right router for the provider you are using.

Strengths: Works. Most of the time.

Weaknesses: Have to reboot the device about once a week.

Summary: Overall good - generally works quite well. Just wish I didn't have reboot it. I can tell when it needs to be rebooted because it will not successfully connect to the broadband connection even though it reports excellent signal strength. After reboot, it works fine.

Strengths: It works and has a strong signal.

Summary: Works well, holds the signal, rarely needs rebooting of sprint card, and that is really sprints issue, not Linksys.

Summary: Works well with Sprint EV-DO card. One drawback is that it does not autoconnect to Sprint after reconfiguration, which makes remote administration difficult.

Strengths: Easy set up and interface. Decent range with the WiFi, and seemless use with the Spring Air card.

Weaknesses: Seems to get unstable after use over a long connecting period and occasionally have to re-program the air card, but this may be a Sprint issue rather than a router issue. Router occasionally locks up and requires a reboot.

Summary: I live in a rural area where cable and DSL are not available. I did not want to use a dish solution, so I tried the Sprint Air card with my laptop, and then bought the router. I very highly recommend this solution to anyone in a similar situation, or anyone that also travels with a laptop and uses "net" access regularly. This is literally a "plug and play" set up that is easy to understand and use.

Strengths: An excellent router that excellently performs it's function. Has great support for many wireless cards and is easily upgradable to OpenWRT.

Weaknesses: Sometimes will disconnect from the Sprint Wireless Network when using the default Linksys firmware, that is why I have upgraded to the OpenWRT firmware.

Summary: I would highly recommend the WRT54G3G router to anyone whose only option is to use the 3G wireless Internet option in their home or RV. This is a flawless package that will trump the traditional "solution" of satellite Internet.

Strengths: Excellent workaround to the express PCMCIA slot in the newer laptops.

Weaknesses: Have to hassle with more bulk in your laptop case.

Summary: I purchased two of these. Both needed firmware upgrades. One accepted it fine, the other crashed and died upon upgrading.

Strengths: Works exactly as advertised. Provides fast internet access to otherwise unserviceable/mobile locations Weaknesses: Slower upload speed then when installed in laptop, Linksys has a new beta firmware that fixes the problem but only the 3G store can give it out to customers how purchased the router from them

Strengths: Works exactly as advertised. Provides fast internet access to otherwise unserviceable/mobile locations. I want to install one in my car!

Weaknesses: Only little nits: Bigger form factor than I would like, and it only supports PCMCIA rather than ExpressCard.

Summary: If you need internet (or mobile Wifi) for anywhere there are no wires, this is a really good solution. Pricier than some, but not as costly as not having internet access at all!

Strengths: Strong signal, easy set up, higher level encryption.

Weaknesses: None.

Summary: Excellent router! Small size allows us to take it on trips. Set up is so simple - it practically does it by itself. Would recommend it without reservation.

Strengths: Allows you to use your Sprint broadband card to power your entire home network.

Weaknesses: Sprint network great for Internet and email, but no so good with latency if you are a gamer or use a gaming console online.

Summary: Great product, worked as advertised, setup a breeze. Very comparable to DSL and low to medium tiers of cable service. Upload speeds faster than many DSL and cable upload speeds. Wireless broadband cannot yet compete with FIOS or top tier cable speeds, however.

Strengths: Linksys know for their excellent Wifi router and this is still the strength of this product. Installation is easy and have many useful feature.

Weaknesses: The weaknesses is in the ability to switch between Sprint mobile wireless broadband and the normal cable modem/DSL uplink. If you have both cable modem and Sprint card plugin, you need to turn off the router and turn it back on to switch connection.

Summary: It's an okay product, however the mobile broadband implementation still buggy and require router reboot everytime plug and unplug the card.

Strengths: Does as promised.

Weaknesses: Reset button doesn't really work. RJ-45 jack is a little small which often makes the cables difficult to unplug.

Summary: Great router for Sprint EVDO card. Easy to set-up. Haven't really need to reboot many times. Clean design which allows for both horizontal or verticle presentation.

Strengths: Great for people who cannot get cable or DSL. Use your Sprint card at home or on the road.

Weaknesses: No high speed internet access if you take the card with you

Summary: This product is a godsend. I was only able to get dial up where I live. I had a Sprint card for my laptop so why not take advantge of the service everyday instead of only when I am on the road.

Strengths: Quick access to Mobile Broadband network

Weaknesses: Plastics and overall feel is a bit too light and cheap feeling. Cost is about $50 too much.

Summary: Outstanding performance for Mobile Broadband with Sprint card. One touch on and off to the Sprint Network. (Needed firmware upgrade but that was seemless as well). Could be less expensive.

Summary: This router works as advertised but is far from perfect. You cannot hot swap the evdo modem. The manual warns that damage may result. If you insert the modem with the router already turned on, it doesn't auto detect. You have to first turn the router off, then insert modem, then turn on. Same to remove. Yet the router does NOT have a power switch. Sometimes, during an active session (with traffic flowing both ways), the connection will drop and not re-establish. You have to manually reconnect either by pressing the blue button twice, or by going into the administrative web page. There is also an auto-disconnect feature that will disconnect the evdo modem after a certain period of inactivity, and then automatically reconnect when activity resumes. This feature does NOT work. It will disconnect but not automatically reconnect. I would have returned this modem if PC Superstore's return policy was more customer friendly.

Strengths: Allows connection to the internet through standard DSL or cable connection in addition to Mobile Broadband network.

Weaknesses: Only 1 external antenna so the Wireless-G range is slightly less than other Linksys Routers.

Summary: Router works great! You will need to update the firmware to use with the PX-500 card from Sprint. A nice feature of this router is the ability to only use the Mobile Broadband as a back-up and have your default internet connection as DSL or cable modem.

Strengths: Broadband access with existing service. 3 in one router. Good firewall. Best one by far.

Weaknesses: A little tricky setting up. Wish it was a MIMO router.

Summary: This is the only way I could get high speed internet. I already was paying for Sprint service on my laptop so why not route that wireless signal around my house.
