Linksys Wireless-G Router for Verizon Wireless Broadband WRT54G3G

Mfg Part #: WRT54G3G-VN

Linksys Wireless-G Router for Verizon Wireless Broadband WRT54G3G

The Linksys Wireless-G Router for 3G/UMTS Broadband is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a 3G/UMTS or GPRS Internet connection (requires Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/UMTS data card, available separately). You can also use a standard Ethernet attached Internet connection, like a cable or DSL modem, if available.

Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing document files, a printer, storage space, and other resources.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Router for 3G/UMTS Broadband can encode all wireless LAN transmissions with WEP or industrial-strength WPA Personal encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Wireless-G Router for 3G/UMTS Broadband, you can create a secure wireless network with Internet connectivity, anywhere that 3G/UMTS or GPRS service is available.

Strengths: Operates flawlessly. Big step up from using ICS for internet connection

Weaknesses: Required updating firmware from manufactures website to support my aircard even though it was in the list

Summary: I am happy I bought the device and I could not beat the price. I had been using my aircard with an external antenna in a laptop. Cellular coverage in my area is poor. This is a big step up from using the ICS feature of windows that required constant resets and rebooting. This router has only required rebooting one time because the cellular carrier dropped off the air. I am totally pleased with the device and the purchase. Everyone in the house is happy they can use their laptops and connect to the internet. Printer sharing is also a much appreciated feature we can use now.

Strengths: Easy setup - Linksys brand/quality

Weaknesses: Only limited by the cell carrier's signal

Summary: I used this to host a meeting at a condo complex on a small island in Florida. The condos did not have wireless and we needed it for the meeting; this proved an excellent solution and had plenty of bandwidth for us to use to get through the few days in paradise.

Strengths: Product works exactly as-advertised and delivers on the promise of allowing you to share your mobile brodband access wireless through your entire home.

Weaknesses: - Overall Linksys user-interface is flakey. *(No worse than any other Linksys UI, but not as solid as I think it should be being a product of Cisco.) - Lack of support (May require firmware updates right out of the box.)

Summary: The WRT54G3G-VN allows your mobile AirCard connection to serve you better as a whole-house internet solution for any number of wireless or LAN connected devices. Why pay for DSL/Cable broadband that only provides access when you're at home? With this router you are able to unleash the full potential of the PCMCIA air-card to provide access to the internet from any wireless or LAN connected devise (even if they don't have a PCMCIA slot). I've found the WRT54G3G-VN to be well worth the purchase price as I am in an area not serviced by Cable or DSL. This forced me to weigh the options of Satellite or Mobile Air/Card. Satellite is costly, subject to bandwidth restrictions, loss of connection in bad weather, and requires a pretty significant investment in equipment up-front. I like the availability and mobility the Mobile broadband access solution provided, but wasn't keen on the idea of having only one machine being able to access the internet at a time (Or setting up a dedicated machine to run ICS on my home network.) I have a Verizon (UTStarcom) PC5750 standard "PC Card" that currently fits in my laptop PCMCIA slot, but with next-gen machines moving to the smaller express card slots I wasn't too sure about how long I would have a machine that would support this particular AirCard. I check out all the reviews and specs on the WRT54G3G-VN and decided to purchase this router for the following reasons: By using the AirCard as my internet access solution I'm able to wirelessly share the connection with all the devices in my home, don't have to mess around with running the VZAccess Manager software on any of these machines, I'm not required to have a PCMCIA card slot on my networked devices, and I'm free to use my internet connection on-the-go as well as at home. So there's my reasons why I like the devise and the benefits I get from having purchased it. Now let's get down to the facts of the router itself: The router is configured pretty-much like any other linksys router out there, same general setup and somewhat flakey configuration interface. (I previously used a Linksys wireless router for my home network so I pretty-much knew what I was getting into here.) I read several product reviews and it seemed like 50% of those I read mentioned some incompatibility between this router and the PC5750 (Many said they could not get it to work). I have to admit this did concern me when purchasing this router, but the Linksys "Supported WRT54G3G-VN Data Cards" pdf available on the Linksys clearly laid out the devices support requirements and supported cards. I suggest you go to Linksys.com and print out this document and pay particular attention to the DataCard Firmware Version and Router Firmware Version that are required. My AirCard had the D5750VEM03_0.210 firmware version that was required, but the router did not ship with the 2.01.6 firmware release. This can be upgraded from a download (Available on Linksys.com) and should be upgraded to the minimum supported level of 2.01.6 prior to attempting to connect to the Verizon Network thru the AirCard. Once you fight through the crappy Linksys UI to upgrade the firmware on your router you should be golden? Connecting from there-on out is quick and painless? I have experienced a handful of instances where after disconnecting from the Verizon Network (If there is no internet activity for over 60 minutes or so the connection is disabled.) and attempting to reconnect the session will not automatically establish and it requires me to manually push the "connect to broadband" button on the router to re-establish the connection. Usually this connection is re-established automatically when there is internet-bound traffic on the network, and at most there is only a slight delay while the Verizon card connects to the Verizon Wireless network (A.K.A. Internet) They key information you should know if you're on-the-fence about purchasing the WRT54G3G-VN is NOBODY actually supports this product? The Linksys box this router ships in has a Verizon sticker slapped on it and Verizon Wireless support contact numbers in the box and documentation, but Verizon representatives know nothing about this devise and will refer you back to the manufacturer (Linksys) for any support or technical questions. Linksys points you back to Verizon for connection issues pertaining to the Air-card and nobody is going to point you in a helpful direction? That being said if you aren?t comfortable updating firmware on the Linksys router don't even bother with this product as there is nobody out there in the free world that cares about you and why you can't connect to the internet using an AirCard and your WRT54G3G-VN. However, If you are able to verify firmware levels, and, if you find you are in possession of a devise not at the minimum supported levels, you are able to update the required firmware on the router / AirCard than this devise is great. It will do exactly what you want it to do and deliver on the promise of allowing whole-house & mobile internet access for one monthly price rather than paying for home & mobile connection separately.

Strengths: Able to share my Verizon Broadband connection.

Weaknesses: Linksys Tech support

Summary: This Broadband router is amazing. We have been stuck with slow Satellite internet for a long time. Being able to get a Verizon broadband account and share it has been wonderful. The only problem I have had is with Linksys tech support. They seem clueless. The first one I had was defective. Linksys kept telling me I was using the wrong card. Despite what their website said. They were telling me to get a card that was so old it was no longer available. Use the Aircard 595 just like the Linksys website says and you will be fine.

Strengths: Linksys Durability, easy set up

Weaknesses: Kinda large, only compatable with one model Verizon Cell Card

Summary: Nice router, would have liked more advance information on the cell cards the worked with the unit. The one I had did not, so I had to buy a different one, fortunatley Verizon had a rebate so it didn't cost me anything, but I had to resign a 2 year contract.

Strengths: Works well when matched with the correct air card.

Weaknesses: This item is unsupported by Verizon

Summary: Verizon rep told us to use their PC5750 card, but it didn't work. Verizon tech support knew nothing about this router. Works only with the AirCard 595.
