EVA7000 falls short - EVA8000 does the trick

Strengths: None

Weaknesses: This product requires software running on a PC on your network in order to view the media content on TV. The PC must be XP (cannot be 64bit and cannot be server versions as the software will not install on anything other than XP 32bit). This was a major issue in my environment and was the reason I returned the product.

Summary: While the EVA700 was not the right product for me, I have found that the EVA8000 is exactly what I was looking for when I purchased the EVA700. The EVA8000 requires no additional software (only file shares) in order to view content on TV and works very well for viewing downloaded/ripped movies, viewing photos and listening to music on TV. I highly recommend the EVA8000 for any digital media enthusiast.

Phil's EVA700

Strengths: Versatile, 802.11B/G, 100MB wired, ViiV ready. MS Media Player v11 interface combined and makes share and viewing easy once detected. Allows to view pictures, movies, music.

Weaknesses: Requires rebooting, unable to browse media easily, unable to play all formats. ViiV technology, does not menu update from PC. Front USB does not allow for external hard drive browsing.

Summary: The interface to my TV and Stereo was easy. Wireless connectivity great for music. ViiV connection through wireless is not adequate. New Media Player combines Media Connect and player. Wired connection recommended. I use both ViiV and Media Share and Nero Media Connect. Multiple shares on my workgroup are easily identified. Browsing is difficult but use of Play list makes selection a snap. Saving configuration occurs but does not allow to browse to network location. Do I recommed this product, yes. I have demostrated this product and setup on other locations than my own that I have shown it to.

jantypas

Strengths: Much faster than previous generation models. The UPnP function responds quickly. Plays a variety of media formats without issue

Weaknesses: No way to specify port number for server. This is an issue if you're running multiple servers. No way to turn unit off. (Can put it into sleep mode.) Remote is a bit flakey.

Summary: If you're considering the Buffalo LinkTheater generation two, this is on par with it. IMHO, Netgear support is still poor, but no worse than its competition, in either case, you're solely on your own with these things. None of the companies seem to know what to do with these products once they roll out the door. However, if you can't use an older PC in the meida cabinet (my choice) and Apple TV doesn't work for you (no WMA), this will.

John in So. Fl.

Strengths: Fairly easy to set up

Weaknesses: archaic menu - very slow and difficult to find and play files

Summary: It is still lacking in technology to make it fast and enjoyable to use. This is an extremely tedious procedure just to view files on the TV. Wait for the next generation (or two)!
