NETGEAR Powerline HD Ethernet Adapter HDX101

NETGEAR's Powerline HD Ethernet Adapter for high quality video and gaming is an ideal solution for connecting a PC, DVR, X-Box 360, PS3, or other game console to the home network. Simply plug one HDX101 into an AC outlet near your router and the other HDX101 near the device you wish to network.

Built-in Quality of Service (QoS) ensures high quality, consistent performance for things like real-time HD video and audio streaming for a digital media adapter (DMA) like the NETGEAR Digital Entertainer (EVA700) or for Internet gaming and VoIP calls. With data rates up to 200 Mbps large file transfers to networked storage devices like NETGEAR's Storage Central (SC101) can be up to 12 times faster than previous Powerline networking products, all with encrypted security.

Strengths: It gives high speed connection to almost anywhere in the house.

Weaknesses: It doesn't work on all circuits in the house.

Summary: I had to use an extended ethernet cord because one adapter was not connecting between the 2 circuits. I tried all over the house but the either one adapter or the other had to be on specific circuits to connect.

Summary: Way better than drilling holes and running wires.Would have cost more in wire, time, and drill bits

Nixfix

Strengths: Plugged into outlets, attached ethernet cables, worked instantly!

Weaknesses: None so far.

Summary: Purchased these to provide ethernet hookup to Sony PS3 in family room-- far removed form upstairs computer area. First learned of them when checking wireless routers on Consumer Reports website, which recommended powerline adaptors for ease of installation and no interference from other wireless products. A couple bucks more than wi-fi, but worth it in my sanity!

Strengths: Ease of installation.

Weaknesses: Not as fast as advertised.

Summary: Truly plug-and-play. No problem connecting an Internet-ready HD Sony television with a D-Link home router and cable internet connection. Better speed and security than WiFi, but not as fast as the "up to 200 mbs" advertised. Still, I would definitely recommend.

Strengths: Eliminates security weakness of wireless

Weaknesses: Speed issues

Summary: My home is not wired w/Cat5 or 6; wireless-G is spotty/flaky. Powerline bridges are dependable - used for office PC, TiVo, Replay TV, Internet Radio service.

Frank

Strengths: No where near 100Mbps, but it works reliably.

Weaknesses: No support for Mac, you have to use a Windows PC to set up. Why can't they use a web interface?

Summary: Only had this for a bout a month. So far happy with it. The latency varies anywhere between 2 seconds to 3 ms. But the throughput is around 15Mbps and at times seems to go upto 30Mbps, no idea why, nothing in my house can be contributing to this as when I see this variation and when I do not I cannot see a common pattern w.r.t other appliances.

Strengths: Great connection, perfect for gaming in wi-fi dead spots

Weaknesses: Takes a little time to get thing up and running.

Summary: Great connection speeds, use it specifically on XBOX 360 and PS3 and works perfectly. Not really plug and play but you will get it up and running.

Strengths: Easy to install.

Weaknesses: Does not work as advertised. Only slighty better than wireless g!

Summary: IMHO this technology is not ready for primetime! To work, it cannot be plugged into a powerstrip and both units must be on the same circuit. I was trying to go from the second floor office to the first floor media room and received a meager 29-34mpbs which I get from my wireless access point. Even putting both in the same room only yielded a 74mbps throughput but that pretty much defeated the purpose. They are currently in my desk drawer

Powerline Wired in Madison, WI

Strengths: Very easy to set up and use. This is actually my second pair of these units - I use them in my condo and I set these up in my friend's house where I couldn't get a reliable wireless conection to one room. These units are extremely reliable.

Weaknesses: Two minor considerations - first, they must be plugged directly into an outlet, not a surge protector or power strip. Second, they can be setup and used out of the box unencrypted which means that you consciously need to enable encryption.

Summary: I had one pair of powerline adapters that I tried using several years ago and I had problems with them so I gave up. These newer units have been superb, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone who needs relatively fast (but not gigabit speed) connectivity between two points in a building. A whole bunch easier than running cable through walls!

DO

Strengths: No need to ever run CAT-5 again

Weaknesses: There is really no weakness unless you run out of power outlets

Summary: This is a great product for any kind of connectivity to any room in your house or office without running the wire

Strengths: Easy installation.

Weaknesses: Performance is spotty now that I've added a third unit. It was much better with only two.

Summary: Better than my wireless, which would drop occasionally. About the same speed but more reliable. I occasionally get long delays (3-5 sec) accessing a file server on the remote end. More than good enough for internet access (cable modem) though.

Louis

Strengths: High powerline bandwidth.

Weaknesses: For some reason, messed up my Ethernet network when I connected three

Summary: This thing is absolutely brilliant. I'm currently using two (connecting a third gave me problems) to connect a wireless access point to it (house not wired with Ethernet ports). My house is lined with really really really power cables and it still works great (at least 50mbps) which is fine for me.

Bob the Builder

Strengths: Smaller form factor than Panasonic, and Linksys.

Weaknesses: 1. It is very hot. Make sure that you have good clearance. 2. Tech support is none existing when you have speed issue. 3. Link light blink most of time and slow speed in certain segment.

Summary: You will need to have very clean power line with very few EM interference to get good result. It is slower than my WI-FI connection. It does have one plus - there is no connection drop like my WI-FI. If you have time to work on your EM issue, then it is a good replace of WI-FI. Otherwise, use physical cable.

Strengths: Easy of use, plug in to a power outlet and your up and running.

Weaknesses: None that I have found.

Summary: I got this unit to handle the XBox 360 and it is truly mobile. You can plug it into any outlet in your house and it works.
