Mfg Part #: FVX538NA

|
At the heart of your office network, NETGEAR's high performance security appliance, ProSafe VPN Firewall 200 offers a complete security solution for small and medium sized companies. This rack-mountable, Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall is equipped with support for up to 200 security associations (VPN tunnels). The FVX538 can serve as a DHCP Server, supports Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Quality of Service (QoS) and has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most common Internet attacks.
Featuring eight auto-sensing 10/100 Mbps LAN ports, one Gigabit LAN port and two 10/100 WAN ports, the ProSafe VPN Firewall FVX538 lets multiple computers in your office share two Internet connections. The dual WAN ports let you connect a second Internet line as a backup to insure that you're never disconnected. Or, use both Internet ports at the same time, and let the router balance your office's requirements between them for maximum bandwidth efficiency. One LAN port can be dedicated as a hardware DMZ port for safely providing services to the Internet without compromising security on your LAN.
With enterprise-class 90+ Mbps firewall and up to 100 Mbps VPN throughput, the FVX538 is an ideal headquarter security solution for companies that need rock solid network protection and fast, secure VPN access for remote employees and branch offices at a cost-effective price point. NETGEAR's timesaving VPN Wizard and SmartWizard simplify setup and VPN administration. Includes, at no extra cost, the ProSafe VPN Client software 5-user license, a $150 value.
Virtual Private Network Consortium (VPNC) tested and certified VPN supports secure data connectivity and transmission over the Internet and ensures interoperability with many other popular security products. The FVX538 also employs the Cavium Networks NITROX security processor to offload the CPU for near wire-speed VPN throughput and blazing fast tunnel setup. Future firmware upgrades will support anti-virus, anti-spam and anti-spyware policy enforcement, a robust intrusion detection system (IDS) as well as the option to use SSL VPN.

Strengths: Fast (20-25mbps from Time-Warner 10mbps service), reliable. Seamless replacement for 2000-era 4-port hardware firewall. No downtime/loss of connections. No configuration problems. Easily upgraded firmware from Netgear website. Have not tried VPN functionality yet.
Summary: 100-mbps firewall/8-port router with DHCP, NAT, and VPN works fabulously.

Strengths: Easy to Setup. Excellent features for price
Weaknesses: None yet
Summary: Purchased this to handle multiple Fios IP addresses with comcast cable as the backup line. I had the router setup within an hour and did a full conversion the following weekend. Everything was successful and I couldn't be happier for the price. I'm now doing VPN deployment which I expect will be just as smooth.

| Good Hardware ... Bad Support |
Strengths: Seems to be very powerful
Weaknesses: Absolutely the worst technical support unit I have ever experienced. Still can not get two items to work as expected.
Summary: I first bought a Netgear firewall that could not handle what I needed (different servers with 4 static IPs). I asked the support engineer what one should I buy and I ultimately bought the FXV538. After being on the phone with comcast for an hour, and then 3 hours with Netgear., we could never get the webserver to work behind the firewall. I gave up and had to connect it directly and use Windows Firewall. Then when I needed to connect to a VPN and spending hours, a tech support told me their firewall was not compatible to the VPN. Their attitude is that everyone else's stuff is what is bad, and theirs is fine.

Strengths: Quite easy to set up. Good throughput speed
Weaknesses: Wish it had more than 1 gigabit port
Summary: Product works flawlessly **However** I am not using the second WAN port (I've seen some posts with issues regarding failover and load balancing). I am using the product for many VPN connections, and the part works great. Only other note is that it does come with 5 VPN client licenses, however they are still XP only, and have not switched over to the Vista compatible version.

Strengths: Dual Wan, Good VPN supprt
Weaknesses: Bad firmware
Summary: The original firmware was horrible, and the newer version is okay, but the throughput is still a lot lower than my pfSense FreeBSD box.
