NETGEAR WG102 ProSafe Wireless Access Point

NETGEAR's ProSafe 802.11g Wireless Access Point WG102 delivers the secure, reliable, high performance wireless local area networks (WLANs) today's mobile workforce demands.

This powerful device provides the industry standard access to corporate network resources, email and the Internet. Fully compatible with IEEE 802.11g, (2.4 GHz), it can also be set for dynamic 108 Mbps 802.11g. With its robust security measures, simplified management and configuration, SNMP support, integrated IEEE 802.3af power over Ethernet (PoE), and Wi-Fi certification, the WG102 brings standards-based enterprise-level functionality at a mid-market price.

Complies with industry security standards for wireless data encryption, and user authorization. 802.11i ready, WPA provides enhanced, interoperable wireless networking security. WPA and 802.1x support enables strong mutual authentication to ensure that only legitimate clients associate with corporate RADIUS servers. Supports MAC address authentication with 256-user Access Control List (ACL) and VPN pass-through.

Integrated IEEE 802.3af-based Power over Ethernet (PoE) support eliminates extra cables and the need to locate near a power outlet, as the access point is powered over the Ethernet cable. Supports Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) MIB I, MIB II, and 802.11 MIB using SNMP-based network management software, such as NETGEAR ProSafe Network Management System NMS100. Supports all popular 802.1x port-based authentication protocols, including Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) Transport Layer Security (TLS), Protected EAP (PEAP), and Tunneled TLS (TTLS).

IEEE 802.11g wireless standard - with optional speeds up to 108 Mbps - takes care of business communications with great dispatch and skill. Delivers functionality for point-to-point and point-to-multi-point bridging and repeater modes. High performance wireless features combine with a typical -75 dBm receive sensitivity (Rx) at 54 Mbps, 19 dBm transmit power (Tx) and a high gain 5 dBi omni-directional antenna for optimal range and throughput.

Strengths: Lots of professional business-class features. Supports a wide variety of encryption and access control standards, plus VLANs, multiple wireless networks, Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint. Plenum rated AND PoE support. GREAT price for the feature set. VERY GOOD sensitivity and power output (S/N ratio). Very reliable. LIFETIME warranty, including the power adapter.

Weaknesses: No signal strength display, which might come in handy when setting up long-range point-to-point links, but I can live without it for the most part.

Summary: I have installed nearly 50 of these access points in a campus wireless distribution system. The VLAN support is excellent, and PoE works great when you need to put the AP in a location with no power. Configuration is straightforward and comprehensive. This is no toy. Sturdy metal case with high-quality circuity inside. Removable antenna connects to an RP-SMA connector, so you can easily interface this radio to a variety of high-gain or directional antennas. I like this model so well I would recommend it for almost any applicaiton, including everyday home or office use. It is rock-solid reliable with the current firmware. Can also do 108Mbit/s ("Super G") in all modes, if you don't have any nearby wifi channels to worry about. For enterprise use, you can also centrally manage up to 8 of these APs from a single WFS709TP, NetGear's wireless controller. PS. I do not work for NetGear, I just really like this particular access point. :)
