Sony STR-DN1000 - AV receiver

The flagship STR-DN1000 receiver features a gloss design ideal for matching with Sony's Blu-ray Disc players. The 7.1-channel model supports Full HD 1080/60p and 24p video signals via HDMI, as well as the advanced audio codecs, including Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD high resolution audio, DTS-HD master audio and LCPM.

Featuring four HDMI and three component inputs, it offers generous connectivity for multiple HD devices. Further, the receiver utilizes its analog connections (component and composite connection) to upscale all incoming sources to near HD quality when connected to an HDTV set.

Additionally, the STR-DN1000 has an icon-driven menu system, allowing for simple device and content navigation. Sources including iPod and iPhone can be easily connected to the system via Sony's Digital Media Port (DMP) input.

Strengths: Pros: . use for home office audio: great sound. . straightforward set up, with or w/o osd. . you still need to consult the manual though. . multiple input options, and ample hdmi and digital audio inputs: 1 coax, 3 opticals. . sound: 110 WATTS WITH VERY LITTLE DISTORTION AT HIGH VOLUMES, NOT AS CRISP AS MY PIONEER 919 VSX, BUT VERY PLEASING. . YOU CAN SET UP THE X OVER FOR THE SUB FOR EVERY SET OF SPEAKERS, NICE FEATURE, goes as low as 40 hz . MULTIPEL SOUND FIELDS OPTIONS, less if analog audio source IS used. . have it hooked to 2 M-60 polksaudio monitors, 4 cieling speakers 120 w/each, 100 w power sub: great sound quality, fills the room and is warm at high and low tones. this unit can drive all speakers & delivers a poweful sound. . Definetly need a SUB: Even with the M-60 Freq. range 42-25 khz, still the sub made the all difference in the sound. . remote : easy and large & controlls all sony equipments. . stylish, shiny, black, hidden buttons behind seemless front door.

Weaknesses: Cons: . not backlit remote: a big minus, not enough to take out an egg though. . runs a little bit "warmish". but it is a huge powerfull machine. give it enough space to breath. . price is acceptable for the feature. price ratio factor is high. . compared to the yamah 565 and pioneer 919, it comes second after both, but may be b/c i am not yet too familiar with it....will update later. . need large finegrs to control the remote with ease. i.e.: volume button all the way down and sudio sources all the way up. not very ergonomic, but still beats the yamaha 565 awful remote. . no scene buttons like the yamaha remote has. not a big problem: u have to push 2-3 buttons not only one. this is nitpicking,.. . upscale only to 1080i. but process trueHD, AND MORE ADVANCED SOUNDs packages.

Summary: Other Thoughts: all in all worth the (...) dollars i paid for here at costcentral.com, but honestly if the pioneer vsx 919 was not on back order I would have got it instead, ..the 2 machines are very similar, but I prefer the pioneer 919 for it's power and purer sound..(not very discernable however). this receiver is a great center processor for any audio or video equipment. I recommend it w/o reservation for anyone looking for good quality video and audio in a receever, with ample inputs and features.

Strengths: Great looking package without knobs, buttons or lights to distract you in the dark. Front lower access panel provides manual functionality. Surround Auto-Calibration is fantastic! On-Screen Menu set-up is similar to accessing your TV's menu to configure the AV Receiver using the remote and is very intuitive. Clean signal output allowed for excellent sound levels.

Weaknesses: Remote has no backlight???? so don't plan on using it in the dark. Speaker terminals are tight in back and require some finesse to correctly secure the speaker wires. HDMI output (TV) has no pass through when unit is off so you have to turn on the unit to get the a signal to the TV. Sound is also blocked on the HDMI output (TV) so your TV speakers receive no signal when the AV Receiver is connected.

Summary: The SONY STR-DN1000 is one of the best looking AV Receivers on the Market. It's front panel is black except for a small image screen that indicates the source channel then switches to volume level when accessed. No buttons, or distracting lights. There is a manual volume control knob but you cannot see it in the dark. Surround Auto-Calibration is very easy to accomplish and did a great job of calibrating the surround speakers balance and fade. Overall the units looks and functions very well for a $500 ($305 @ Cost Central) AV Receiver. Sound quality is on par with comparable AV Receivers however, In my personal opinion, its the best looking unit with all the current technology available in one nice package.
