Strengths: Easy to setup, works well with Linux (tested with OpenSUSE 11.1). Settings can be entered via Web admin interface, not limited to front panel touchpad.

Weaknesses: Would be nice if one coould enter more "default" settings (e.g. for the FTP server).

Summary: The Phaser 6180MFP/D is a good quality workgroup printer. The combination I was looking for was Color laser, Postscript, Duplex printing, Network and Linux support. Currently (Q1 2009) I know of no other printer in a reasonable price range to fullfil all these requirements at the same time. The printer seems mechanically stable and works as advertised. Note: As a workgroup printer the system is larger than what you typically have at home.

Strengths: Fast and good print quality

Weaknesses: Major weakness is the expense of use. Xerox "blends" their inks in black and white mode, so that you are using up color ink (especially cyan) when printing in black and white, so you will find your cyan and other inks disappearing even faster than the black.

Summary: Be prepared to spend alot of money on toner. This is not an economical printer to use.

Not sure what's going on with your printer, but when the black toner cartridge on our 6180 ran out the color cartridges are still over 50%. Black and white printing with the high capacity black cartridge should be about $0.025 a page. Good luck finding cheaper printing!

Strengths: True Postscript, duplex printing, excellent text rendering, good color reproduction for a laser printer. Not as noisy as many color lasers.

Weaknesses: Complex setup for some features, especially scanning to computer and faxing.

Summary: This printer was generally easy to setup, and produces good to superior printing results, depending on the output. Photos are about as good as you can expect from a color laser printer, though generally darker than I'd like. I have not tried adjusting it yet, so this may be fixable. Text rendering is much better than many laser printers, if only because this is a real Postscript printer. Set up for some advanced features proved to be more difficult. I never did have any luck getting scan to computer to work using file sharing, even with Xerox technical support assistance. They pretty much admitted that this wasn't going to work on a Mac, though the documentation says otherwise. I was able to get scanning to a computer to work via FTP, however. Overall, for under $1,000, this printer is tough to beat.
